African Black Soap Review

CHECK OUT MY YOUTUBE REVIEW!

Okay, so many people love to use African Black Soap as a part of their healthy hair journey routine. I love to use it whenever I feel like I want to use a soap that will help get rid of build up on my hair and scalp. This soap is very rich with vitamins A and E and is made with Shea Butter, Plantains, Coconut Oil , Coco Pod Powder and Kernel Oil. This soap leaves my hair feeling really nice and keeps my curls intact.

I usually only wash my hair about three times a month since my hair loves being co-washed every day or every other day. Co-wash for people that do not know, is when you are simply using a conditioner to wash your hair instead of shampoo. This way your hair still feels clean but your leaving all of the good oils on your tresses. Anyways African Black Soap is one of the few soaps the I would say any hair type can use with out it drying your hair out or making your hair if it is thin feel weighed down with oils.

A lot of people use African Black Soap as a major part of their hair routine and I can see why. This soap truly helps your hair to feel moisturized. I felt like it leaves my tresses clean but shiny and my curls just pop right after. Although you really don’t need to add conditioner after this soap you can just add your normal oils or butters to your hair, my hair loves a good drink of conditioner so I give to her.

I also noticed that some people love to use this soap to help with acne. I’m sure there are plenty of people that suffer from acne thankfully I’m not one of them but I have seen a lot of before and after pictures of what this soap does to get rid of acne scaring and let me just say this soap is a little miracle worker. Well let me know what you think I have included a link to my video above on how I use this soap on wash day.

Do you suffer from traction alopecia?

When women and sometimes men wear braids in their hair they do it for not only a fashion statement, but these easy to maintain styles are also considered protective hair styles. Protective hair styles are when your hair is not being manipulated on a daily basis and the ends of your hair are tucked away. Having braids can have a multitude of benefits for the overall growth and health of your hair, but did you know that some braids could be doing more harm than good? Traction alopecia is an unfortunate problem that many people face when they either wear their hair too tight from certain hair styles or have braids that are causing too much stress and tension on their natural hair.

Traction alopecia on a little girl that clearly should be having braids in her hair that are so tight!

Traction alopecia on a little girl that clearly shouldn’t have braids in her hair that are so tight!

Traction alopecia is something that is found more in the African American community than any other community. The reason for this is because in the African American community women tend to wear hair styles that pull and tug on their hair to the point that the hair follicle falls out. Bad hair habits and products can lead to this problem as well. First traction alopecia is when your hair ceases to grow in a particular area anymore. The reason for this is because you have mistakenly pulled your hair so tight with either a bun/ponytail or braids to the point that your hair becomes weak, from all of the tugging and eventually gives up the fight to stay on your head and just falls out of your scalp.

Traction alopecia typically happens at either the front of the hair line, your crown, or the nape. These areas of the hair are the softest spots on our head and the main areas that women struggle with trying to grow their hair in. By making your braids extra tight so that you will not have to go back too often to the salon to get them redone you are unfortunately damaging your hair. Many times people feel that because they have braids in their hair that they do not have to worry about moisturizing or even washing and conditioning their hair. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you keep up with taking care of the braids just like you do your own hair not only does it help fight against traction alopecia it help to maintain the health of you actual hair.

Micro braids are not the best choice if you want to avoid traction alopecia.

Micro braids are not the best choice if you want to avoid traction alopecia.

Try and put thicker braids in your hair to prevent traction alopecia.

Try and put thicker braids in your hair to prevent traction alopecia.

When thinking to go and get your hair done or even doing it at home there are few things that you should consider doing to prevent traction alopecia.

~Try and get thicker braids. Mini braids/micro braids create the most tension on your hair because they tug and pull on your natural tresses. Most women get these braids and put even their baby hair (finest hair) in the braid and these pieces of hair are already weak and they will eventually fall out.

~Opt for bigger braids if you want to do braids at all. Bigger braids allow for more strands to be braided and therefore a lot of stress is not put on a single strand which will just break off with the weight of the synthetic braid.

~Always keep up with your health hair regimen. Wash, condition, deep condition and seal your hair even if it is in braids because although you’re not seeing your actual hair it is still there and needs some TLC.

~ Do not pull your hair too tight just to lay down your hair smoother. Opt for an all natural hair gel, such as our formation hair gel that moisturizes your hair at the same time.

~ Do not keep your braids in your hair for longer than a month. Your hair needs to breath and it needs to be detangled and moisturized regularly outside of the braids.

~ Although the song “I whip my hair back and forth” is cute this is an action you shouldn’t be doing while wearing braids. With every swing and flip of the hair it produces tension on the tresses and weakens the hair follicle and this is when you might see a braid or two falling out of your head.

~If you in fact do suffer from traction alopecia than there are a few things that you can do to grow back your hair. Stop wearing braids so tight, and massage your scalp with oil regularly. Unique Fighter Serum is made with essential oils that are made specifically for growing in the edges of your hair including spots affected by traction alopecia.

Did Rapunzel give us an unrealistic goal of hair growth?

rapunzelDisney has been known for creating characters that little girls look up to and want to emulate. With the character Rapunzel the dream of wanting to become her is no exception, except there is a small difference. Instead of admiring her happily ever after story, we want her long flowing seemingly healthy looking tresses. But just like any other character that we as little girls have looked up to and unfortunately even when we become adults find ourselves still wanting to be a part of these fairy tale stories, we may find that our dream for long flowing hair might be unrealistic for all of us, or is it?

When we hear the Disney characters name Rapunzel there is only one thing that comes to our mind and that’s long blond hair that goes on for days and days. Sometimes young girls want to have this hair not just the length but also the color and this just like any other fairy tale sets us up for disaster and unrealistic dreams. Hair is just hair for a lot of people but if we were all truly honest about it we want to have long flowing tresses that are healthy and admired by others. Many girls grow up and when they become adults they still want this long flowing hair but when they look in the mirror they find themselves look at hair that is not that texture, not that length, and definitely not that color.

Instead of looking at this unrealistic female character as a person, we need to be looking at her as just a source of entertainment and nothing more. But for many of us that does not stop our admiration for fairy tale length hair. For women that have curly, wavy, textured and non blonde hair we may think that there is no way that our hair can grow to unforeseen lengths. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. With the proper diet, water intake and healthy regimen, did you know that your hair could grow to these fairy tale lengths and beyond?

Learn How To Care For Your Tresses

love my hair

The first step to getting the hair that you want is learning how to take care of it first. Everybody has a busy life for the most part and doing our hair and making sure that it is healthy sometimes falls on the bottom of the list of priorities. Weeks and months pass and your tresses are being neglected and pretty soon you’re wondering why your hair is breaking off and looking lifeless. Well we at Flourishing Tresses will help you to have a regimen that helps you to achieve the tresses that you have always wanted.

Having healthy hair not only makes you feel good but it is also a reflection on your internal health and your outward appearance. The first step of getting your hair back to health is to assess the state in which your hair is currently in and ask yourself a few questions.  Is your hair at the length that you wish? Do your tresses have the body and shine that you desire? Are you currently happy with the texture of your hair? Is your scalp healthy and free of dryness, flakes, and irritation? If you have answered no to any of these questions, perhaps it is time to go on a healthy hair journey so that you can answer yes to not one but all of these questions.

So you’re probably wondering just what exactly is a healthy hair journey and why do you need to be on one?  It’s just hair right? Well it is just hair, but let’s be honest ladies our hair whether we want to admit it or not can make or break or entire day. A healthy hair journey is when you have decided to put the health of your hair and scalp on your priority list and make an effort on changing bad hair care habits around. It is very important that you listen to what your hair is telling you it needs whether that be moisture, a trim or deep conditioning treatments to get it back to the health that you want. In the beginning of your healthy hair journey you want to make sure that you come up with a hair regimen that is appropriate for you and make sure that you are using the correct products.

As a natural hair care line we pride ourselves on making sure that your scalp is clean and your tresses are moisturized with ingredients that are going to do more good than harm for you. Having healthy products to put in your head is important because you could have the best regimen in the world but if you are using products that are drying out your hair and irritating your scalp, you’re never going get to your goal of the hair you have always wanted. If your hair has been feeling too oily or too dry and your scalp has some irritation then perhaps it is time to take a gander over to your hair care products shelf at home and read the labels. Any product that has alcohol is obviously going to dry out your hair and irritate your scalp so it is important to eliminate these items as they only make your hair feel and look nice temporarily. In the African American community hair greases have a history as being the number one item that is used to slick down our edges and give us “moisture”. Any item that has petroleum jelly “grease” in it is not good for your hair as it only coats your tresses and clogs your pores which makes it hard for your hair to grow through all of this build up on your scalp. Most women feel as though they have to add grease to their hair because after they shampoo their hair feels dry and stripped of all possible signs of moisture. Well the reason for this is because of the sulfates in your shampoos. Sulfates are what makes your shampoo lather and increases the suds as you wash your tresses. But you should stay away from this ingredient because all their doing is stripping your hair and leaving it susceptible to breakage.

Now that you have taken a look at your products it is important to rid yourself of the products that are bad for you and start using natural products that will increase the body shine and overall health of your hair and scalp. Since you have assessed your hairs current condition and gotten rid of harmful products it is time to start thinking about what schedule you want to set for your hair. Yes, it is true that in order to get healthy hair you must come up with a hair schedule, this way you are consistent. No matter what your hair texture, length or condition of your scalp there are a few things that must always be on your hair regimen.

The first step is setting up a time that you plan on refreshing your scalp by cleaning it and giving your hair follicles a nice clean area to flourish and thrive.  We at Flourishing Tresses suggest that you wash your hair once a week. For some of you, you’re already shaking your head and saying no way am I doing that my hair will be dry and break off. But let’s not forget that once you get rid of the shampoos that are bad for your hair and start using our sulfate free and alcohol free shampoo your hair will still retain the moisture that it needs to thrive. A clean scalp is important and makes it less prone to having breakouts and even hair loss. It is very vital to start each week with clean tresses so that your scalp has a chance to breath from all the products that you are putting on it during the week.

The next step is that each week we at Flourishing Tresses recommend that you lavish your hair with a hot oil treatment and or a deep conditioning treatment. Doing these treatments is the best spa therapy for your hair because it stops and or eliminates shedding and increases moisture and shine while decreasing breakage. For the hot oil treatment we recommend using our Unique Fighter Serum and heating it up slightly not so that it burns your skin and then applying it all over your hair and scalp. Once you have applied the oils put a shower cap on your head for a minimum of 30 minutes. For an even deeper treatment keep the oil on longer and if you wish sit under a dryer for about 30 minutes. We do not recommend excessive amounts of heat on the hair so you also have the option of putting this treatment on your hair and either working out or doing house work to build up the heat to your scalp naturally.

The next step to your regimen is different than all the other steps because this is something that must be done every day.  Moisturizing and sealing your hair is important. What moisturizing and sealing is, is when you are taking the proper steps to ensure that the tips of your hair are having a smaller chance of breaking off which leads to not gaining your desired length. Please keep in mind that the tips of your hair are the oldest and so they need the most TLC in order for you to retain hair length. You want to make sure that you are using a moisturizing product such as Flourishing Tresses Metamorphosis Shea Butter Cream to  lock in the moisture and then sealing in that moisture with oil. For the oil we recommend Flourishing Tresses Unique Fighter. What you’re going to do is take the shaft of the hair and place a small amount of cream on your tips and then seal in this moisture with an oil so that the moisturizer can keep replenishing your hair and stop it from getting dry throughout the day.

Now for the ladies that are seeking to rid their scalp of irritations and dryness this next step in your regimen should be done either everyday or every other day. This is oiling your scalp to ensure your scalp either gets back to health or stays healthy. Now I know some of you ladies maybe asking, why would I want to oil my scalp wont that break my scalp out and make my hair severely oily? Well the answer is no, because you are not going to put so much oil on your scalp that it creates a buildup. What you are going to do is take the Unique Fighter Oil and then apply a small amount to your finger tips. Then in a circular motion rub the oil all over your scalp for at least five minutes a day or every other day. Not only does this increase circulation in the scalp which promotes hair growth but it also will help start growing your edges and crown back if they are missing hair. This will also rid the scalp of small dermatological problems such as flaky scalps, irritation, and itchiness.

The last part of the regimen is making sure that you are only using combs that have wide set teeth to go through your tresses. We recommend detangling the hair in the shower with Flourishing Tresses Transcender Conditioner. It is also vital to keep your hair in a protective hair style. A protective hair style is when the ends of your hair are not touching your neck and are tucked in so that they will not start to break off. It is okay to wear the hair down every once in a while but if your goal is to retain length then we suggest keeping your hair tucked in a bun or braid or some other protective style. When the hair rubs up against your clothes especially sweaters and harder materials that older hair at the bottom of the hair shaft will start to snap off because it is weaker. If you’re at shoulder length hair and want to get past this length we definetly recommend a protective style until you get past your shoulder because at this length this is when just the tips of the hair are rubbing on your clothes the most.

At Flourishing Tresses we want to make sure that you are having a healthy hair journey and all though these are just suggestions we would like to think that this will be helpful in having success on your path to wonderful and luxurious tresses. Once again it is important to listen to what your hair needs. You may need to moisture and seal twice a day or only twice a week. It is okay to create your own hair regimen that works for you, this is just a starting point for you. Make sure that you are evaluating your own hair and seeing what adjustments you may need to add to your regimen as your hair starts to grow and transform. Massaging Your Scalp For Hair Health

Unique Fighter Serum

Unique Fighter Serum

When you think of growing your hair most people consume their efforts with trying to figure out what to do with the hair they currently have. But did you know that the best way to improve your overall health of your tresses is to start at the root? Your scalp is where each hair follicle is generated so why not make sure that you are taking care of that part of your hair first?

Having a healthy scalp for your hair to grow out of is just as important as when you’re growing a garden to make sure that your soil is perfect and ready to nurture your flowers. When it comes to your tresses it is no different than a garden, you must make sure that your scalp is ready to nurture and help flourish your tresses. Some individuals fail to pay attention to their scalps health and then they wonder why their hair is either not growing or their hair seems to be weak and break easily. Taking a look at your scalp frequently to ensure that it is free of break outs and dry patches is important because if you don’t see there is a problem with your scalp, how are you ever going to fix it?

There are a few things that you can do to improve the overall health of your scalp, of course for people that are experiencing dermatological issues they should seek the help of a professional rather than trying to concur major dermatitis problems by themselves. For individuals that may have minor problems such as dandruff, itchy scalp (non rash), and oily scalps, and problems increasing the growth of their hair should consider doing a few miniscule things to improve their hair and scalp health.

Massaging your head is essential to increasing the circulation in your scalp.  By increasing the circulation in your scalp you are amplifying the amount of red blood cells that form in your head. I am sure you’re wondering why the increase of these cells are important, well they are because an increase in cells means that there is growth and rejuvenation occurring. When rejuvenation occurs your scalp produces more hair follicles. Making sure that your scalp is being massaged on a daily basis is imperative when you are trying to increase the amount of hair you receive each month. Although massaging your head helps the hair growth phase did you know that massaging with carrier and essential oils can actually help to improve the circulation in your scalp and even get rid of some minor dermatitis issues you may be having.

Peppermint oil is an oil that helps improve the circulation in the scalp and it also acts as a natural cleanser for your head. Using tea tree oil will treat dry itchy scalps and it clears it of miniscule dermatitis issues, while chamomile oil helps with inflamed and itchy scalps. If you are suffering from dandruff or if you have a child that has lice than using lemon oil will help to reduce the dandruff but also reduce the risk of getting lice as the lice will not want to live an area that has this oil on it. If you’re looking for something that will help to promote your hair growth than it is recommended that you use almond and castor oil to help prevent hair loss and increase your circulation. By rubbing a mixture of these carrier and essential oils into your scalp on a daily basis it will not only help to improve minor scalp irritations but in just a matter of months you will start to see your tresses flourishing. With Flourishing Tresses Unique Fighter Serum you will find these carrier and essential oils along with of plethora of other oils will help to improve the overall health of your scalp. This oil has grown in hair for people that have either thinning hair or areas of the scalp that are failing to thrive. You will see the difference in your scalp if you simply massage your head a minimum of three times a weak with Unique Fighter Serum. To purchase this oil please visit our website at www.flourishingtresses.com. The best way to massage your scalp properly to get the best result is to start in the front of your head and put oil on all ten fingers and rub each section of the head in a circular motion. If you want to be precise count to about fifty on each section working your way to the back of the head ensuring that you are reaching every part of your scalp with the Unique Fighter Serum.

Does my shampoo clean my hair or strip my hair? Is there a difference?

2nd lather shampoo

When you think of shampoo you think of that nice lather that foams up on your hair and scalp and removes all of the day and weeks dirt from your scalp. What if your shampoo is doing more than it is supposed to be doing? You may be enjoying the sensation of the foam and suds running down your tresses but are you really doing more harm than good when it comes to cleaning your head and scalp?

Often times when we think of any type of cleanser we refer to a product that will produce some sort of foam or suds because we have been taught that when a product reacts this way it is cleaning. But did you know that you can clean your hair and scalp just as efficient without the harmful detergents that cause the foaming in your favorite shampoo? I am sure that you are thinking why does it matter if my shampoo foams or not? Well most of the time the detergents and sulfates that are in our favorite shampoos are causing our tresses and scalp to become overly dry and limp.

When you look at the label of many popular shampoos you will see sulfates & detergents that are listed as the active ingredient. These ingredients are harsh and do not know how to gently clean your hair but it only knows how to strip your tresses. Think of it this way, when you see the commercial for dawn soap and they are cleaning the ducks off with the soap it is able to clean the oil off the feathers because the power of the detergent. Your favorite non sulfate free shampoo is the same way, it is powerful enough to not only clean the oils and dirt out of your hair but it strips all of your natural oils that your head produces naturally and needs to keep your tresses flourishing.

sebum

Your scalp produces what’s called sebum; it is the naturally derived oil that flows down your tresses to moisturize the hair follicles and keeps them from getting brittle. Most people are able to produce the proper amounts of sebum to help their hair grow and stay healthy, but if you have any type of curl pattern in your hair than unfortunately this sebum that your scalp produces naturally is not able to flow down your tresses to naturally moisturize your follicle to the tip. So if the sebum cannot travel down to the bottom of the hair than that means it is not moisturizing you’re tresses naturally. The reason for this is because your natural oils only know how to travel straight down the tresses without “road blocks” a road block would be having spiral, kinky or even curly tresses. If your hair is naturally straight you have no problem with your natural oils traveling down your tresses because it doesn’t have to try and maneuver through waves it has a straight path. If your hair is not naturally straight you will have to add other oils and moisturizers that you’re naturally producing oils (sebum) cannot reach. So when you are now adding non sulfate free shampoos to your daily or even weekly hair maintenance, you are stripping even the external oils that you need and you are essentially working against your naturally producing sebum. So what does this lead to? Well breakage and overly dry tresses and dry flaky irritated scalps.

Refresher Shampoo

Flourishing Tresses Refresher Shampoo

The only way to solve the deficit you have with having curly or wavy hair is to keep as much moisture in your tresses as possible, while gently cleaning out the oils and dirt that you don’t need. The best way to do this is to buy sulfate free shampoos. Flourishing Tresses has their sulfate free Refresher Shampoo that is made with acacia concinna. This ancient Indian herb gently cleanses the hair but leaves your natural oils alone and it also stimulates hair growth. This fruit for the hair is able to clean your hair and not strip it from the moisture that it needs to thrive, especially for men & women that have curly or even coarse hair. It is important to understand that a shampoo that lathers is not just cleaning but stripping the hair. Having foam and suds does not, in any way equate to the only way your hair can get clean. Most of us are just used to the lather and are not aware that our tresses can be cleaned in a much more natural way that is not only good for our tresses but also helps to increase the circulation in our scalps which entices hair growth. Flourishing Tresses Refresher Shampoo doesn’t lather, rather it gently cleans the scalp and tresses without stripping it which leaves your hair still feeling full of life and moisture. Remember if your stripping the hair of oils your hurting your and making it prone to breakage and split ends.

Are you putting the correct amount of protein & moisture on your tresses?

Image

When learning to tame our tresses one of the first things that people will say is that you need to moisturize your hair to prevent breakage and dry scalp, which is true. But, how much moisture is too much moisture when it comes to making sure our tresses are flourishing? Sometimes it is hard to find a balance between dry hair & greasy hair. It is important to listen to your hairs needs and learn that too much of a good thing could actually be hindering your successful hair journey results that your are seeking.

The average person that is not paying attention to their hairs health tends to under moisturize their hair. On the other hand for some individuals that are just learning how to take care of their hair better, they  become heavy handed and over moisturize their tresses with the belief that having a ton of conditioning agents and pomades in their hair will prevent breakage and make it grow long and strong. Will there has to be a balance between under moisturizing & over moisturizing. The best way to find this balance is to learn about your current hair health.

Did you know that your hair is made up of protein? Your hair is actually made up of about 90% protein and this is important to know if you plan on restoring or even maintaining the health of your tresses. Since your tresses are made up of protein it is important to balance the amount of moisture you put in your hair with the amount of protein you put in it. The reason behind this is that when you are doing chemical processes on your hair such as relaxers, color treatments, over-brushing and washing with products that have sulfates & detergents in it, you are actually stripping your tresses of not just moisture but the protein it needs to stay healthy. When you have too much moisture in your hair not only does your hair feel greasy but it can make your hair susceptible to breakage, but also becoming weak, gummy, & stretchy. Now I know for many of you, you are thinking that doesn’t make sense how can too much moisture break my hair off? Well too much moisture is not allowing your hair to have an even balance of protein which it needs to stay strong up against products and the elements. On the flip side too much protein can cause the hair to become hard and sometimes even harder to get a comb or brush through it.

When your hair is stripped of moisture it is common knowledge that your hair feels dry and brittle and is prone to breakage. But what happens when you hair loses its correct amount of protein? Well your hair can actually stop growing in certain places and cause bald spots. Now of course the entire reason why you want to learn about the health of your hair is to make sure that it is growing. There is no reason why something as simple as protein balance should stop you from reaching your hair growth goals. There is a simple test that you can conduct on your hair that is very simple to make sure your hair is balance & doesn’t have too much protein or too much moisture.

There are two ways in which you can test the protein and moisture balance in your hair. The first thing you need to do is to just feel your hair to see if it feels rough or brittle. If your hair feels brittle and dry it may need protein in it or even moisture. The first test is to take a piece of hair that has fallen out of your head such as a piece of hair in your brush or even a hair follicle that you have shed. Hair sheds all the time on a daily basis so there is no reason to go ripping your hair out of your own scalp to perform these tests.  What you are going to need to do is pull on that hair until it snaps and breaks. If the hair snaps instantly then your hair is brittle and needs moisture. When stretching the hair and it keeps stretchy without breaking or returning to its original length then you need protein in your hair and you have too much moisture. If your hair stretches and returns to its original form then you are doing a great job at maintaining healthy hair because your tresses are properly balanced.

The second test is to once again take a piece of hair that has already fallen out of your head and get a glass of water. Put the strand of hair in the glass of water for a minimum of 2-3 minutes. If your hair is floating then this means that your hair has low porosity and may have a hard time absorbing moisture. But on the other hand if you see that little strand at the bottom of the glass because it has sunk then this means you have what’s called high porosity. Porosity looks at how damaged your hair is and if your hair is able to even accept moisture properly. If your hair sinks your have high porosity and the strand is damaged and once your hair gets to this point it is hard to restore the health of these strands. If your hair floats in the middle of the glass of water then this means your hair is healthy and your hair regimen is working perfectly for you.

If you have high porosity your hair is weaker and it may even feel gummy when its wet and it may take a long time for it to dry. The hair at this point tends to hold onto any moisture that it can to fill the gaps that are in the hair follicle from damage and protein loss. Protein actually fills the hair follicle preventing it from having gaps in it and allowing it to properly take in just the proper amounts of moisture and preventing brittle hair.  Once your hair is damaged there is unfortunately not much you can do to restore it since hair is not a living organism. You can always do light protein treatments by using Flourishing Tresses Transcender Conditioner. You can do a hot oil treatment with our Unique Fighter Serum to try and restore some protein in the hair. Although this is a temporary fix it will make your hair feel better but it is best to slowly start trimming the hair to get rid it of the damaged hair eventually.

Hair Growth: Dreams vs. Realities

Flourishing Tresses

An essential part of your healthy hair journey is having realistic expectations of how fast or slow your hair can grow. No matter what your current hair length is everybody has a dream goal for their tresses to grow depending on where your hair length is you may desire one or all of the following for your  goal:  neck length, shoulder length, arm pit length, bra strap lap, mid-back length or longer. Remember two myths about black hair are that black hair fails to grow and if it does it will not grow past neck length.  Neither of these myths are true because black hair just like any other hair grows which means that you can set realistic hair growth goal for yourself to reach.

Realistic expectations of hair growth will motivate you to keep making healthy decisions for your tresses throughout your healthy hair journey. How many times have you looked at your hair and felt discouraged because you think “it’s not growing”. Let’s realize our emotions are attached to our hair and when you think your hair isn’t growing you may feel discouraged, frustrated, defeated or even break down and cry an “ugly cry”…everyone has had these moments or even days.  The dream is that many of us want to grow out our hair length to as long as we possibly can. To help you focus on your hair dreams  realistically and fight against  the feelings of defeat,  this article we will discuss the cycle of hair growth, the reality of the average rate in which hair grows, uncover what may be keeping your hair from growing and gives some tips on how to promote hair growth.

So how does hair grow and how long can it grow in a year?  There are ways to achieve longer hair growth along your healthy hair journey and part of the growth process is being able to understand what phases your hair is going through so you are armed with the knowledge on how to care for your tresses during all phases.  There are three phases to hair growth:

Phase 1- The hair growth phase is known as the (anagen phase);

Phase2- The resting phase known as the (catagen phase);

Phase 3-the shedding phase (telogen phase).

Phase 1-About 85% of the hair on your head is in the hair growth phase at any given time and this is the phase when the cells produce new hair which leads to the roots of the hair (papilla) absorbing moisture and nutrients to stimulate the hair follicle to make your tresses flourish. The longer the hair stays in the hair growth phase the longer it will grow. The hair growth phase can be extended or shorten depending upon your hair care regimen and healthy lifestyle choices. Hair grows on average about ½ inch per month which is about 6 inches per year. You’re probably thinking 6 inches per year for hair growth is just another myth but it’s a fact that hair can grow this much in a year especially with the use of natural products in the Flourishing Tresses natural hair care line. Black hair can sometimes grow slower depending upon the texture of our hair and the natural wavy curly pattern of our hair. Our natural curly hair pattern can make it seem like hair is growing even slower because the hair is curly and not stretched or straightened out.  Keep track of your hair growth on video or in writing so you can track your progress.

Phase 2 the resting phase can last up to two weeks. During this phase shrinkage occurs because the hair root is at rest from taking in nutrients. Although hair is not growing during this phase the hair follicle pushes the shaft of the hair upward and this is when new growth becomes visible around your edges.

Phase 3 the shedding phase is the end of the hair cycle and begins once the resting phase is over. In this phase , the old hair is being replaced and pushed out by new hair so you will see shedding. Don’t confuse shedding hair with broken damaged hair. Shedding hair is hair that has reached the end of its growing cycle and falls out naturally from your scalp along with a tiny white root ball at the end. Shedding is a natural part of the cycle in the hair phases and should not be a cause for any alarm. Shedding can last between several days or over a few weeks but will be different for everyone. You can shed an average of 50-100 hairs per day but don’t panic because remember the hair growth phase starts right after this phase so your hair has a natural cycle to produce new hair.  Shedding may increase according to the following leading factors: pregnancy, birth control pill, menstrual cycle, menopause, poor eating habits, styling methods or chemical processes that weaken or damage the hair follicle, anemia, thyroid disorders and certain medications.

So how can you make your hair growth dreams come true and work towards the goal of growing at least 6 inches of hair a year? Be realistic about your hair growth dream now that you fully understand the phases of the hair cycle and how much growth to expect per month. Realize no hair care line can do miracles to grow your hair by you just putting it on your head. Your hair grows all of the time and you can increase your hair growth potential by using Flourishing Tresses natural hair care line because our products contain ingredients and essential oils that promote growth. Next, moisture is the key inside and out so use our Transcender Conditioner to moisturize your hair along with our Unique Fighter Hair Serum and drink 8-10 glasses of water daily (no sweet drinks).
